Málaga and Sport   City of Malaga | Transports | Maps

Although sports tradition has a long-standing history in Málaga, what deserves to be emphasised is its dynamic and young present and, above all, its promising future.

Both local people and tourists visiting the area enjoy being in contact with nature in their leisure time, be it doing one of the many sports for which specific facilities and equipment sare available, or taking a walk and going out into the different enclaves of this area. The province provides the opportunity of doing almost every sport: golf, sailing, horse-riding, swimming, athletics, tennis, basketball, high-risk and adventure sports and many others.

The Costa del Sol counts on one of the widest offers of golf courses in the world, with over 40 courses –both for amateurs and professionals, with 9 or with 18 holes, long or short, easy or difficult–, with the added incentive of major tournaments such as the Volvo Master, the Spanish Open or the Ryder Cup.

Aquatic sports (ski, sailing, surf, windsurf, diving, snorkelling, etc.) and marinas are other great attractions of the Costa del Sol, which has the widest offer of marinas in Spain, with a marina every 10/15 km. There are diving clubs and boat sale and repair centres all along the coast line, as well as organised trips to enjoy the richness of the Alboran Sea.

The first important sports facilities were built in the city from the 1940s on, first of all with football – considered the ’kingof sports’– and its stadium of ‘La Rosaleda’, that is being refurbished. In the 1960s, athletics takes off with the construction of the Ciudad Deportiva de Carranque and the Multi-Sports Hall of Ciudad Jardín. More recent constructions are the University Campus of Teatinos, several district multi-sports halls and the integral plan to equip many football stadiums in the city with artificial grass.

Finally, the building of the most important sports complex in Malaga’s main expansion area, including the ‘José María Martín Carpena’ Sports Hall, the Athletics Stadium and a major enclosure of indoor swimming pools, are providing the city with high level facilities that allow us to hold major sports events and spectacles.

The private sector plays a relevant role in the sports offer too, with plenty of clubs and associations for all kind of sports activities.
