Madrid once again rolls out the red carpet to welcome the best world and Spanish athletes. The Madrid Meeting 2010, included in the IAAF World Challenge, provides the opportunity to watch world class athletics, enjoy seeing the best athletes in this sport and witness exciting competitions. It will be a unique chance to check out the form of those athletes who are in with a chance of competing in the European Athletics Championships, to be held three weeks later in Barcelona.

It will be a magnificent opportunity for the city, one of the most lively and vibrant in Europe with rich cultural and social traditions, to renew its commitment with this sport, a relationship that dates back in time. We should remember that Madrid organised the second Ibero American Championships in 1962 and from then it has hosted some of the most important competitions in our sport, such as the European Indoor Games in 1968, the European Indoor Athletics Championships in 1986 and 2005 and the World Athletics Cup in 2002.

Focussing on the meeting, which was held for the first time more than thirty years ago, in 1979, and which has seen legendary athletes like Said Aouita, Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses, Michael Johnson, María Mutola and from more recent times the pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva and the high jumper Blanca Vlasic compete in various venues: Vallehermoso Stadium, the Estadio de la Comunidad, Las Rozas, Alcobendas, Alcorcón and during the last three years, the Moratalaz Sports Complex. Over the previous twenty six editions numerous Spanish records have been broken in the Madrid Meeting, which has also attained a world record: that achieved by Isinbayeva in the pole vault in 2005 with a vault of 4.95 metres.
