The Athletics Stadium Ciudad de Málaga is strategically located in the city’s western area, beingeasily accessible by road, not far from the Airport and in front of the ‘José María Martín Carpena’ Sports Hall, occupying a 82,300 m2plot.
It forms part of a new major sporting complex that include the Stadium, the Sports Palace and a swimming pool complex (Centro Acuático de Málaga) with large parking areas as well as plenty of green spaces.
The Stadium constitutes a model for elite sports facilities that permits holding all types and levels of athletics competitions, and it has been conceived in view of strengthening the impressiveness of those competitions.
It is made up of a main building, a central athletics track and an adjacent warm-up area.
The main building of the Stadium is organised in four levels vertically connected by stairsand lifts to make access and internal flow easier.
In level 0 we can see the areas aimed at athletes’ training, with four 100m lanes, areas for long and high jumps and for pole vault, amounting to 1,500 m2; changing rooms, toilets, medical, organisation and ceremony centres, in addition to several technical rooms and storage areas, all making it a singular facility unique of its kind, which will permit an optimal combination of competition venue and top level athletes training centre.
Level 1 houses the ticket sales booths and the general access halls, from which the public gets to the stands at ground level; meeting and press rooms, bars, direction-management area and both male and female toilets are located there too.
Level 2 houses the VIP zone, the Authorities Stand, bars and toilets; from here the public can access the middle level stands through ten stairwells.
Level 3 houses the booths for video-finish, commentators, broadcasting, public address systems and the operating control unit.
The stand can accommodate 7.616 spectators and is protected by a spectacular metallic structure cover.
The building is completed by a perimeter ring that surrounds the central track and can seat 3,200 spectators. The Stadium has a total built surface of 12,054.81 m2.
The 9 lane competition track can be accessed from both sides of the stand. The track perimeter is wide enough to allow the flow of organising staff and the media.
The 4 runways for both long and triple jump are at the two sides of the track, two facing the grandstand (west) and two on the opposite side. In both cases there will be a runway inside the track ring and another one outside. Such distribution permits to reduce as much as possible the distance between the spectators and the track. The runways for both long jump and pole vault and the throwing areas will be located inside the competition track.
The warm-up area, located at the southern end of the plot, is made up of a sand basis with a quadrangular platform erected on top for shot put, hammer and javelin throw.
