1999: All the honours to Andrés Diaz
Olympic Stadium. 29th July
The 1999's date was completely marked by the middle-distance races. A few weeks before the World Athletics Championship in Sevilla, Andrés Díaz showed a great strength and beat in the men 1500m race clocked one of the best world records in that season. Carla Sacramento showed again her international status in the same distance race, for women, where she run almost alone.
Andrés Diaz run one of his best races (one year later, in Monaco, he got 3:31.48, the best 1500m result of his life) competing against Reyes Estevez, who in a few days would win one of the four medals for the Spanish Athletics in Sevilla, and besides, he broke the record of the stadium with a superb time of 3:31.97 which has not beaten so far. Amongst women, Sacramento was about to get a record under four minutes (4:01.93) in a race in which she shortly knocked out all her opponents.
Another Spanish athlete, Niurka Montalvo, was about to be the world champion in Long Jump. She was the winner in her speciality with 6,84m. Another result to be highlighted was the one the Russian Tatiana Shikolenko got in Javelin: 64,25m.
