1998: Sprint, the best
Olympic Stadium. 25th July
Sprinters were the great stars in the 1998 International Meeting Ciutat de Barcelona. In the list of participants there was Donovan Bailey, Olympic champion in Atlanta, Steven Lewis, member of the US relay team 4 x 400m that had beaten six years before in Barcelona 92, and Debbie Ferguson. It was a safe bet for sprint.
The results were not at the same level of the fame the star athletes had but the show was worth it. The three before mentioned athletes fulfilled the expectations easily. Steven Lewis shone in 400m (45.38)
There was a much better level in the field events. In Pole Vault the winner was Gregory Yegorov, who afterwards will stay in Spain for living. He beat Javier Garcia Chico, the local hero in that discipline. In Hammer the Hungarian Balazs Kiss got an incredible result of 81,12m.
In the men category there were just a few Spanish victories. The one from Isaac Viciosa who won in the 1500m race continuing with the traditional Spanish superiority in this discipline and Raul Chapado in Triple Jump.
Glory Alozie, representing the Nigerian flag, won as expected in the 100m hurdles race (12.81) and the Mozambican Maria Mutola, with almost no opponents, won in 800m.
