GRAN CANARIAS - CITIES

    European Cup Winter Throwing 2017 will be disputed in two cities: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Vecindario de Santa Lucía, in the Canarian island of Gran Canaria.

    Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of the island with an approximately population of 380.000 inhabitants, being the most populated city in Canarias and the ninth in Spain. City was founded in 1478, after Juan Region, captain of Castilla's Crown, started the conquest of the island.

    The city is the venue of the Delegation of the Spanish Government, the presidency of Canarian Autonomous Region along with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, of the Canarian Superior Court of Justice and the Cananarian Social and Economic Council. One of the main events of the city is the Carnival, one of the outstanding happenings of the islands and with an international projection. City is settled besides the sea, with an extension of 100,55 km2 and with an altitude of 8 metres over sea level. The city has a benign climate with an average annual temperature of 22ºC.


    Regarding Vecindario, it is a city located south of Las Palmas, 35 kilometres far by road and 15 kilometres from the Gando airport. It belongs to the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana. It has an estimated population of 70.000 inhabitants and is the main population and commercial center of the Southwest of the island, being part of the Gran Canaria's SouthWest Commonwealth, which includes villages of Santa Lucía, Agüimes and Ingenio.

    Santa Lucía was formerly a village which economy was based in agriculture but now it has derived in one of the most important commercial centers in Canary island, attracting thousands of tourists who look not only sun and beach but also culture, ethnography, shopping, gastronomy, leisure and sport. It counts with the biggest open air commercial center in the Canary islands, the Pedestrian Area of Avenida de Canarias and is also known as a reference in windsurfing thanks to the ideal conditions of Pozo Izquierdo beach.
