20km race walking European champion, the main star of the Spanish team Miguel Ángel López ready to shine at home

   

[13th May] Without any doubt, 20km race walking European champion Miguel Ángel López will be the main reference for Spain in the European Cup of race walking next Sunday in Murcia. Lopez compete at home and is waiting for this date with the big hopes in his way to World Championships in Beijing in August and Olympic Games in Rio'2016. For the athlete from Murcia this competition will be special: "I will compete very close to my home, with my people encouraging me… I have big hopes for this competition. The course is spectacular, the ambient is great. I'm very confident and I hope the date arrive as soon as possible".
After his gold medal in the past European Championships in Zurich, López know that in future competitions everybody will expect him to being fighting for the maximum goals: "now my goal will be fighting for medals in every competition I enter. After the success in Zurich, not being in the podium would be a step behind". The next objectives for the Spanish walker will be World Championships in Beijing and, mainly, Olympic Games in Rio'2016, where he will look for the only medal missing in his curriculum: the Olympic one. After this, there will be time for thinking in the 50 kilometers: "this winter I disputed 35km Spanish Championships like a test event ahead of the 50km. After Rio I will try to probe with this distance".

Moulinet (FRA) and Giorgi (ITA), best European walkers in Rio Maior

   

[20th April] Last Saturday it was disputed Rio Maior International Race Walking Grand Prix, sixth event of the 2015 IAAF Race Walking Challenge and one of the last tests for European walkers ahead of European Race Walking Cup, to be held next 17th May in Murcia. This Portuguese city, with a very long tradition in race walking, saw the victory of the Colombian walker Elder Arévalo in the 20km with a performance of 1h20:53. The first European walker was French Bertrand Moulinet, fourth classified with 1h21:22. Other outstanding European included Ukrainian Ruslan Dmytrenko (5th with 1h21:37) or Italian Giorgio Rubino (6th with 1h21:50).
Regarding the women's event, victory in this case was for Chinese Liu Hong with a mark of 1h27:22 ahead of Italian walkers Eleonora Giorgi (1h28:12) and Elisa Rigaudo (1h29:15). Portuguese athletes Ana Cabecinha (1h29:17) and Ines Henriques (1h29:52) were the next in the overall classification. We have also to point out the performances of Neringa Aidietyte (LTU), sixth with 1h30:40, and Julia Takacs (ESP), seventh with 1h31:23.
RESULTS

Spanish team for the European Cup in race walking Murcia 2015 announced

   

[31th march] This Tuesday Spanish team competing in the next European Cup in race walking to be held on 17th May in Murcia was announced. The team will be formed by 18 athletes (11 men and 7 women). Some of the main stars of the Spanish team include current 20km race walking European champion Miguel Ángel López, one of the illustrious veterans of race walking, Jesús Ángel García Bragado, who will compete in the 50km, or Beatriz Pascual in the women's event.
Specifically, in the 20km race walking event for men they will form the Spanish team, apart from Miguel Ángel López, Álvaro Martín, Alberto Amezcua and José Ignacio Díaz, while in the 50km Marc Tur, Benjamín Sánchez and Luis Miguel Corchete will accompany Bragado. In addition, in the 20km for women we have to underline the presence of a long experience athlete like Beatriz Pascual, along with the current Spanish champion of the distance, Raquel González, Julia Takacs and María José Poves.
Spanish team competing in Murcia will be completed with the two junior teams. In the men's event over 10km the main star of the team will be silver medalist last year in Eugene Diego García Carrera. With him they will be in the starting lane Manuel Bermúdez and Pablo Oliva. In the women's event Spanish team will be formed by María Pérez, Lidia Sánchez-Puebla and Irene Vázquez.
Current European champion in the 20km race walking Miguel Ángel López has shown a magnificent shape ahead of his participation in the next European Cup in race walking to be held in Murcia. He dominated last Sunday the Spanish Championships of the 20km race walking in Rentería with an outstanding 1h19:52, one of his personal performances over the distance. The walker from Murcia adds a new Spanish title to the one conquered past February over 35km in Jumilla, where he performed 2h32:56.
López preceded in the finish lane Alvaro Martín, sixth classified last summer in Zurich, who bettered his personal best by 20 seconds to perform 1h20:19 and junior athlete Diego García, who in his debut over the distance established a new Spanish record of the category with 1h21:45.
At the same time, a female 20km race walking event, programmed in the RFEA race walking Criterium, was celebrated. The winner was Julia Takacs with a performance of 1h31:33 ahead of María José Poves (1h32:31) and Laura García-Caro (1h32:36).

He dominated last Sunday the Spanish Championships of the 20km race walking in Rentería with an outstanding 1h19:52, one of his personal performances over the distance. The walker from Murcia adds a new Spanish title to the one conquered past February over 35km in Jumilla, where he performed 2h32:56.

Yohan Diniz será una de las grandes estrellas de la Copa de Europa de Marcha

   

[17th march] With only two months to the celebration of the 11th European Race Walking Cup in Murcia, we start to know the names of the outstanding athletes of European race walking who plan to compete in Murcia's capital. One of this big names is the current 50km European champion and world record holder, French Yohan Diniz.
Diniz, who was one of the big stars of the past European Championships held in Zurich, where he stablished a new world record in the 50km with an outstanding performance of 3h32:33, last 8th March added a new record in the 20km in Arles with 1h17:02. However, only one week after Japanese Yusuke Suzuki bettered this performance with 1h16:36.
37 years old Diniz has showed a magnificent shape this season and his immediate plan is to compete in this European Race Walking Cup in the 20km event. In this distance he will face the current European champion, Spanish Miguel Ángel López, who will compete at home. Then, Diniz plan to be in the starting line in both distances 20/50km in the World Championships in Beijing.
