HISTORY OF THE WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The World Indoor Championships had a brief precedent in 1985 when the World indoor Games took place in Paris, barely two years after the inaugural World outdoor championships held in Helsinki 1983. Until then, the European Championships served as the main reference point at the indoor season. They first were celebrated in 1966 under the name of "European Indoor Games" to receive the current status of "European Indoor Championships" in 1970.
The World Indoor Games was a successful dress-rehearsal with the attendance of over 300 athletes representing nearly 70 nations. Only two years later, the IAAF gave the event the current status of World Indoor Championships whose first edition was held in the North American city of Indianapolis. From then on, the event has been staged every two years although it was decided to celebrate the Championships on even years to not coincide with the World Outdoor Championships.
